Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t think anyone has actually asked any of these questions, but meh.

Q: How do I get in touch with Ten Hour Guy?
A: Please see the contact page.

IMAGE READS "There are problems with the security certificate"Q: I get a spooky message about site certificates when attempting to view this site. Is this normal?
A: No, this is not normal, but in most cases it is completely safe. There are a few reasons why this could be happening.

  1. Your device could be set to the wrong date.
  2. You could be using a pre-2012 version of Android or a differrent outdated mobile OS as pictured to the right.
  3. You could be using a gaming device with poor SSL support such as, well, anything Nintendo-related.
  4. A poorly executed man-in-the-middle attack could be happening, in which case you should secure your network settings.
  5. Something weird is going on at my end.

Q: Do you sell stuff?
A: No.

Q: How do you make your videos?
A: This will be documented properly in the future.

Q: Can you help or do me a favour?
A: I can try! Just get in touch.

Q: If I create an account on this site, will my login data be safe?
A: Despite many security measures, I cannot guarantee that this site won’t get hacked. There may be some vulnerability that I’m aware of. However, if the site does get hacked, anyone who knows what they’re doing will be able to access everything. I assume that sensitive data such as passwords will be encrypted using a strong algorithm and salt but I didn’t exactly write WordPress so have little idea of what’s what.

Q: Is it possible for me to increase or decrease the level of security on my account?

A: You should always choose a password that is reasonably strong (such as 6X>HQI6+x{#8 as opposed to donaldtrump). There is currently no way to remove the captcha (pictured to the right) on the login screen, though I may replace it with something else in the future. People are blocked based on IP address after several failed login attempts within a period of time, also regardless of the account attempted to log into.

Q: I changed my Gravatar but it hasn’t updated on your site. What do I do?!
A: Yeah… Gravatars are cached on this site to speed up loading times for visitors and avoid relying on external sources 24/7. Simply wait for up to a week or request that I clear your Gravatar from the cache. It may be possible for users to manually update their own Gravatars in the future but I’d need to figure out how to implement that and it’s very far down on the to-do list.

Q: I think my login details have been phished. What do I do?
A: Please report how you got phished to with any relevant links or emails included. Change your passwords for any accounts sharing the same password, especially your email! I’ll keep an eye out for suspicious activity and let you know what’s what, though if something happens to your Ten Hour Guy account, I cannot get the account back in your hands without sufficient evidence that you are the correct owner as to avoid people manipulating me into letting them hijack people’s accounts.

Q: Can I use profanity on your website?
A: Yes, but not excessively.

Q: I’m writing an awesome article for your website but what is the optimal everything for images?
A: 840 pixels wide, preferably under 200KB per image and with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 2:1. These are not strict rules.

  • If you are exporting your images and a JPEG, quality level 90 is usually a good place to start.
  • If you’re exporting as a PNG, you may wish to save it as a PNG-8 (indexed colours) to save space.
  • If you’re exporting as an animated GIF, it is recommended you optimise it by resizing, adding transparency to each frame and removing any unnecessary colours from the palette.
  • If you’re exporting as a BMP, go home, you’re drunk.
